Narrative:

     Irvin Robbins was born on 30 Mar 1839 in Indiana. His death certificate and obituary show he was born in Rush Co., but his family was listed in neighboring Shelby Co. in 1840 when he was less than a year old, so it appears he was actually born there.7,8,9,10
     He was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Dr. Richard Robbins, in the 1840 Federal Census of Liberty Twp., Shelby Co., Indiana.18 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rush Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, Dr. Richard Robbins and Sarah A. Wood.19
     Irvin graduated from North-Western Christian University, which later became Butler University, at 13th St. and College Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana, in Jun 1860.20
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, enumerated 23 Jun 1860, in the household of John Carter, a clerk, and his wife, two young sons, and a 14-year-old servant. He is listed as a student, apparently a boarder with two other students and two carpenters.21 He also appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, where he was listed as a student at N. C. Indianapolis.22
     He began the practice of law in 1861.20

     Irvin enlisted as a private, Co. F, 7th Indiana Infantry, 22 Apr 1861, at Greensbrug, Indiana.23,24,25 He was mustered out 2 Aug 1861, at Indianapolis, Indiana.26,27
     Irvin married Cassandra Cobb, daughter of Reuben Rice Cobb and Amazetta H. Morgan, on 10 Apr 1862 in Decatur Co., Indiana, with Rev. Dr. van Buskirk offciating.11,12,13
     Irvin enlisted as 1st lieutenant and adjutant, 76th Indiana Infantry, 19 Jul 1862, at Greensbrug, Indiana.28,29,30 He was mustered out 25 Aug 1862.27
     Irvin registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated in Jun 1863, while living in Greensbrug, Indiana, reporting he was employed as a lawyer. The form called for prior military service to be noted, but his was omitted.31
     Irvin was commissioned as a Captain, Co. A, 123rd Indiana, 18 Nov 1863, and promoted to Major 24 Jun 1864.32,33,34 He was musted out 25 Aug 1865 in Lexington, Kentucky.35,16,36

     Irvin moved to Iowa after the War, but remained only a short time before returning to Indiana.20 Back in Indiana, he became a hardware merchant, in Greensbrug.37,38
     Irvin and Cassandra appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Decatur Co., Indiana, enumerated 12 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $600 and personal estate of $20,000. His mother was listed as living with them.39
     Irvin and Cassandra moved to Indianapolis in 1875.40
     Irvin applied for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service on 24 Nov 1879, which was subsequently approved.41
     Irvin and Cassandra appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at 12 West North Street, enumerated 15 Jun 1880. Their children Walter, Earle, Albert and Ida were listed as living with them, as was his mother.42
     In Indianapolis he became a manufacturer of vehicle bodies, initially as a carriage maker. Later he made automobile bodies. By 1910, his son Earle was also in the business.43,44,45,46,47
     He was commissioned a 1st lieutenant and adjutant in the Indiana Militia, 1st Regiment Light Artillery, 5 Dec 1882.48,49 He was promoted to brigadier-general and adjutant-general, 16 Jun 1886.48,50 He retired from the state militia 9 Jun 1897.20
     Irvin and Cassandra appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at 12 West North St., enumerated 7 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Earle, Albert and Ida were listed as living with them, as were his mother and Matilda Peck, a servant.51
     Irvin and Cassandra appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at 12 West North St., enumerated 29 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home. Their son Earle was listed as living with them.52
     Irvin died on 9 Feb 1911, at his home, 12 West North St., Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at age 71.14,15,16 He was buried on 12 Feb 1911 in South Park Cemetery, Greensbrug, Decatur Co., Indiana.17
