     Emily Grutze was born on 5 Mar 1859 in California.7,8,9
     She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Scott Valley Twp., Siskiyou Co., California, in the household of her parents, Charles Grutze and Mary [surname unknown].18 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Scott Valley Twp., Siskiyou Co., California, in the household of her parents.19
     Emily married first John Marion Chancy on 17 Sep 1878 in Siskiyou Co., California.10,11
     Emily was granted a divorce from John on 5 Feb 1880 in Siskiyou Co., California, Superior Court. She was granted a judgment for costs and a counsel fee of $100, and restoration of her maiden name.12
     Emily married second John Gideon Hallick, son of John Hallick and Hannah Chittenden Cobb, on 7 Apr 1880 in Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, with E. Steele, judge of Superior Court officating.13,14
     Emily and John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Her daughter Louisa was listed as living with them.20
     John died on 23 Dec 1899.21,22
     Emily appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, enumerated 5 Jun 1900, reporting she owned her home, free of mortgage. Her children Louisa and John were listed as living with her, as were Lousia's children, Bernard and Henry Gaunt.23
     Emily applied 17 Nov 1902 for a pension based on her late husband's service in the Indian Wars. She retained an attorney in Washington to file the claim for her. Over the next few months she and others submitted a copy of their marriage record, statements and affidavits establishing that there was no public record of her husband's death and that she had not re-married nor had they divorced, and the undertaker swore he had buried her late husband.24 On 24 Oct 1903 the Pension Office requested additional documentation. She submitted another affidavit detailing her prior marriage and divorce, a letter from John with his signature, a copy of her divorce degree, and others submitted additional affidavit's supporting her claim. On 19 Jan 1904 the Pension Office asked for a statement about whether her first husband had served in the U.S. military. She submitted an affidavit 5 Mar 1904 stating that so far as she knew he did not.25
     Her pension of $8 per month was approved 4 Apr 1904, retroactive to 27 Jun 1902. The $25 attorney's fee was to be withheld from her payment.26 Her pension was increased to $12 per month effective 19 Apr 1908 under legislation passed that year.27
     Emily appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, at 612 North St., enumerated 20 Apr 1910, reporting she owned her home, free of mortgage. Her grandsons Henry and Bernard Gaunt were listed as living with her.28 She was a janitor at a school in 1910.23
     Emily appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, at 612 North St., enumerated 15 Jan 1920, reporting she owned her home, free of mortgage. Her daughter Mary and her husband, Ward Cook DeBoie, were listed as living with her.29
     Emily appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, on North St., enumerated 15 Apr 1930, reporting she owned a home valued at $10,000, and owned a radio. Her daughter Mary and her husband Ward were listed as a separate household in the same building.30
     Emily appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Yreka, Siskiyou Co., California, at 662 North St., enumerated 3 Apr 1940, reporting she owned a home valued at $4,000. Her daughter Mary and her husband was listed as living with her.31
     Emily died on 11 Feb 1941 in Siskiyou Co., California, at age 81.15,16 She was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Siskiyou Co., California.17

Louisa's father is unknown. She was born before her mother's first marriage. She seems to have been adopted by her mother's second husband, John Gideon Hallick, whether formally or not is unknown. Louisa consistently used his surname after her mother married him.33,34,35
