     James Merlon Devereaux was born on 5 May 1910 in Northampton, Pennsylvania.8,9,10 He was baptized on 11 Nov 1911 in St. Paul's Reformed Church, Northampton, Pennsylvania, with Rev. W. N. George officiating.1
     He generally used his middle name, Merlon.2,14,15
     He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Northampton, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents, William James Devereaux and Anna Elizabeth Simons.6 He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Northampton, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of his parents.7
     He was a tree surgeon with Davey Tree Experts in Lexington, Massachusetts, at the time of his marriage.15
     James married Doris Goodwin, daughter of Morris Hazen Goodwin and Nina Edwina Frohock, on 3 Sep 1937 in Weymouth, Massachusetts.11,12,13
     James and Doris appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of South Weymouth, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, at 936 Main St., enumerated 17 Apr 1940, reporting that they were renting their home, for $40 per month, and that he had lived in Northampton in 1935 while she lived in South Weymouth.16
     He was a clerk in a shipyard in 1940, when he reported he had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and 48 weeks the prior year, earning $1,200. He reported in the 1950 census he had worked 40 hours the prior week. He also reported working 52 weeks in 1949, earning $3,333 in wages or salary, in that year in 1945.16,17,18
