Narrative:

     John J. Devereaux was born in May 1847 in Ireland.6,7,8
     He arrived in New York with his parents, Richard Devereaux and Mary Furlough, about Dec 1850, after a voyage of three months. For weeks before their departure they had collected food and clothing for the journey.12,13,14 They immediately boarded a stage coach for Hokendauqua, Pennsylvania, a trip lasting more than two days.15
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of South Whitehall Twp. in the household of his mother.16
     John was naturalized about 1870.17,18,19
     John married Sarah A. Eskey, daughter of John Eskey, about 1874.9,10,11
     John and Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 1 Jun 1880. Their children William, John and Nicholas were listed as living with them.2
     John and Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 2 Jun 1900, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children John, Nicholas, William, Edward, Sarah, Anastacia, Margret, Mary and Thomas were listed as living with them.3
     John and Sarah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of East Hokendauqua, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, at Quarry St., enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Sarah, Anastacia, Margret, Mary, Thomas and Lawrence were listed as living with them.20
     His wife died before 1920.21,22
     John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hokendauqua, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, at 5 Quarry St., enumerated 28 Jan 1920, reporting that he owned his home, free of mortgage. His son Lawrence was listed as living with him, as was his sister Mary.23
     He was a laborer, by 1900 working for a cement mill where he continued to work the rest of his life.2,3,24,25,26
     John died on 13 Nov 1928 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, at age 81.4 He was buried on 16 Nov 1928 in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania.4
