Mary M. Francl was born on 6 Jan 1888 in Nebraska.8,9,10She moved to Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, with her parents before 1900.16 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, in the household of her parents, Frank Francl and Mary Rysavy.6
Her father died on 4 Jul 1901, when Mary was 13 years old.17,18 Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, in the household of her mother.5
She was a saleslady in a dry goods store before her marriage.19
Mary married John Frederick Shurtz, son of Frederick J. Shurtz and Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, on 1 Jul 1911 in Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska, with Rev. W. W. Kraupa, priest at the Catholic Church, officiating.11,12
After their marriage Mary joined John in Lexington, Nebraska.20,21 They moved to Denver, Colorado, about 1919.22 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Denver, Colorado, at 1440 York St., enumerated 13 Jan 1920, lodging in the home of Edwin J. Parker and his wife and son.23
Mary and John moved several times in the next few years. They were at 1531 Welton St. in 1921, rooming at 1445 Stout St. in 1922, and at 681 Grant St. in 1923. By 1924 they were living at 318 6th Ave., where they lived until 1926.24
Mary and John moved to 2259 Holly St. about 1927 and lived there until shortly before his death.25,26 They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Denver, Colorado, at 2259 Holly St., enumerated 7 Apr 1930, reporting that they owned a home valued at $8,000 and did not own a radio.27
Mary and John moved to 1640 E. 18th Ave. about 1934.28

She was a saleswoman in a retail bakery after the death of her husband. She reported in 1940 she had worked 48 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $832. She reported in the 1950 census she had worked 57 hours the prior week.31,32
Mary appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Denver, Colorado, at 6 Broadway, enumerated 4 Apr 1940, living with Bessie D. McIassc, another bakery shop saleswoman. They reported they were renting their apartment, for $30 per month, apparently in large multi-family building, and that both had lived in the same city in 1935.33
Mary appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Denver, Denver Co., Colorado, at 6 Broadway, enumerated 10 Apr 1950, reporting she lived in a home that was not on a farm.34
Mary died on 2 Aug 1952 in Denver, Colorado, at age 64, at her home.13,14 She was buried in Catholic Cemetery, Ord, Valley Co., Nebraska.15
