     Mary Lavina Smalley was born on 28 Jul 1855 in Ross Co., Ohio.8,9,10 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Union Twp., Van Buren Co., Iowa, in the household of her parents, William J. Smalley and Hannah Jane Logan.18 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Amity Twp., Page Co., Iowa, in the household of her parents.19
     Mary married Francis Marion Arnold, son of Russell Arnold and Jemina [surname unknown], on 16 May 1872 in Page Co., Iowa.11,12,13
     Mary appeared with Francis and their children, Emma L. Arnold, Joseph A. Arnold and Cora J. Arnold, on the 1880 Federal Census of Independence Twp., Montgomery Co., Kansas, in the household of Russell Arnold and Jemina [surname unknown], her husband's parents.20
     Mary and Francis appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 14 Jun 1900. Their children Charles and Ethel were listed as living with them, as was Otis P. Conlkin, a 22-year nursery laborer shown as a boarder.21
     Mary died on 10 Jun 1904 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at age 48.14,15,16 She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.16,17
