David and Bessie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Washington Co., Tennessee, enumerated 20 Apr 1910, They report that they owned their farm though they are listed as living in the same dwelling as Jane E. Copp, a 66-year old widow who also reports owning her farm. Their children Dorothy, Clifford and Violet were listed as living with them, They seem to have been surrounded by relatives. In addition to Jane Copp, adjacent households include Jacob F. Copp, age 59, and his family, Bruce B. Copp, age 32, and his family, and Harvey Broyles, age 60, and his family.15

Their children Violet and Gertrude were listed as living with them.2 Their two younger sons, Woodrow, age 13, and Paul, age 9, were living with their eldest daughter, Dorothy, and her husband, Warren Van Duzer.16
David and Bessie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 301 South Elm St., enumerated 6 Apr 1940, reporting that they were renting their home, for $10 per month. Their son Paul was listed as living with them.17
