Robert Emmett Cooper was born on 6 Feb 1864 in Christian Co., Kentucky.7,8,9He generally used his middle name, Emmett, as a child, apparently to avoid confusion with his father who was also named Robert. He seems to have contiued to be known by his middle name for much of his life.1,6,15
He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lafayette, Christian Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents, Robert James Cooper and Lucy Ann Ragdale.16 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Christian Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents.5
Robert married first Nellie Crider, daughter of J. E. Crider and Alice Wyatt, on 7 Jan 1890 in Fredonia, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, with Rev. M. E. Chappell officating.10,11
Robert and Nellie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky, at 112 Thirteenth St., enumerated 12 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Also listed as living there were his mother, his brother William and his wife Bessie and their 3-year-old son Robert, and his brother Garland and his wife Stella McNeill.6
