     Nellie May Roughton was born on 16 Jul 1887 in Champaign, Champaign Co., Illinois.8,9,10
     She moved to Michigan with her parents by 1895. She appeared on the 1895 State Census of Michigan Twp., Scott Co., Kansas, in the household of her parents, Allen Jarvis Roughton and Elizabeth Bell Wampler.15
     She moved to Kansas with her parents by 1900. She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cheyenne Twp., Lane Co., Kansas, in the household of her parents.5
     Nellie married Arthur Allen Madden, son of Milton Taylor Madden and Emiline Alice Killgore, about 1905.11,12,13
     Nellie appeared with Arthur and their children Afton and Kenneth, on the 1910 Federal Census of Elk Creek Twp., Republic Co., Kansas, in the household of Milton Taylor Madden and Emiline Alice Killgore, his parents.16
     Nellie and Arthur appeared on the 1915 State Census of Agenda, Republic Co., Kansas, shown as renting space in the home of Fritz and Rena Labohn. Their children Afton and Kenneth were listed as living with them.17
     Nellie and Arthur appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Agenda, Republic Co., Kansas, at Main St., enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Afton, Kenneth, Helen and Fern were listed as living with them.18
     Nellie and Arthur and their daughters Helen and Fern moved to Oregon between 1920 and 1930. They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, at 63 Pine St., enumerated 12 Apr 1930, reporting that they owned a home valued at $2,500, and owned a radio. Their children Helen and Fern were listed as living with them.19
     Nellie and Arthur appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, at 63 Pine St., enumerated 10 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $2,500, and had lived in the same house in 1935. Their divorced daughter Afton was listed as living with them, as were her children, Doris, Jeanette, and Katherine, who reported they had lived in Crescent City, Oregon, in 1935.20
     Nellie and Arthur returned to Kansas by 1950. They appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of La Crosse, Rush Co., Kansas, in the household of her mother.21
     Her husband died on 10 Dec 1975 in Jackson Co., Oregon.22
     Nellie died on 19 Mar 1977 in Jackson Co., Oregon, at age 89.14
