Arthur Allen Madden was born on 27 Aug 1876 in Cherryvale, Montgomery Co., Kansas.7,8,9He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Cherry Twp., Montgomery Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents, Milton Taylor Madden and Emiline Alice Killgore.4 He appeared on the 1895 State Census of Elk Creek Twp., Republic Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents.14
By 1900 Arthur had moved to Missouri, where he worked as a teacher of commercial subjects.15 He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Carthage, Jasper Co., Missouri, enumerated 14 Jun 1900, boarding in the home of Alfred S. Smith and his family. Also boarding there were four other men and one woman, a Methodist Deaconess.16
By 1905 he had moved back to Kansas, where he purchased and operated a farm.17 He appeared on the 1905 State Census of Lewis Twp., Gove Co., Kansas, enumerated as of 1 Mar 1905. He reported that he owned a farm of 320 acres, all of which was "unimproved," meaning it had never been plowed or mowen, and was unfenced. The value of the property was $250, with no value assigned to buildings, though his home was located there. He had sown 28 acres in winter wheat, 35 in barley, and 20 in sorgum. He had sold $5 worth of eggs and poultry the past year, and had on hand 14 horses, 1 milch cow and 63 other cattle..18
Arthur married Nellie May Roughton, daughter of Allen Jarvis Roughton and Elizabeth Bell Wampler, about 1905.10,11,12
Arthur appeared with Nellie and their children Afton and Kenneth, on the 1910 Federal Census of Elk Creek Twp., Republic Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents.19
Arthur and Nellie appeared on the 1915 State Census of Agenda, Republic Co., Kansas, shown as renting space in the home of Fritz and Rena Labohn. Their children Afton and Kenneth were listed as living with them.20
Arthur registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at Agenda, Republic Co., Kansas, reporting he was employed as manager of a lumber yard for River Lumber Company in Agenda.2 He was a bookkeeper for a lumber company by 1910, and reported his occupation as lumberman in 1915. By 1920 he was a lumber dealer.21,22,23
Arthur and Nellie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Agenda, Republic Co., Kansas, at Main St., enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Afton, Kenneth, Helen and Fern were listed as living with them.24
Arthur and Nellie and their daughters Helen and Fern moved to Oregon between 1920 and 1930. They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, at 63 Pine St., enumerated 12 Apr 1930, reporting that they owned a home valued at $2,500, and owned a radio. Their children Helen and Fern were listed as living with them.25
Arthur was the proprietor of a tire shop by 1930. By 1940 he was the manager of an automobile sales company. That year he reported he had worked 48 hours the last week of March, and had worked 52 weeks the prior year. By 1950 he was a clerk at a furniture store, reporting in the 1950 census he had worked 48 hours the prior week.26,27,28
Arthur and Nellie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Ashland, Jackson Co., Oregon, at 63 Pine St., enumerated 10 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $2,500, and had lived in the same house in 1935. Their divorced daughter Afton was listed as living with them, as were her children, Doris, Jeanette, and Katherine, who reported they had lived in Crescent City, Oregon, in 1935.27
Arthur and Nellie returned to Kansas by 1950. They appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of La Crosse, Rush Co., Kansas, in the household of Elizabeth Bell Wampler, her mother.29
Arthur died on 10 Dec 1975 in Jackson Co., Oregon, at age 99.13
