     William was a commander in the U.S. Navy in World War II, entering the service 16 Nov 1940.16
     He was a clerk at an oil company office in 1920 in Los Angeles, California, and a ship master at a steamship company by 1930. In 1940 he was a supervisor in a WPA bedding project, reporting that he had been out of work 65 weeks ("public emergency work" was counted as out of work), and had worked 52 weeks, earning $1,611 the prior year ("public emergency work" was counted here) in Los Angeles, California.25,26,27
     William married second Mavis Frances Hamby, daughter of Rev. William Thomas Hamby and Annie Lydia Zackary, on 3 Jun 1945 in District of Columbia. She had previously been married to Edward R. Welling.10,11,12
