Zadock Remington Jr.

Narrative:

     Zadock Remington Jr. was born on 27 Nov 1789 in Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.^6,7
     He was probably one of the three males under age 16 listed in the household of his father, Zadock Remington, in the 1790 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.¹³ He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father in the 1800 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.¹⁴
     His mother died on 21 Aug 1805, when Zadock was 15 years old.^15,16
     Zadock married Sophia Cobb, daughter of Elkanah Cobb and Mary Willard, who was also his father's fourth wife.^8,9
     Zadock bought for $200 four parcels of land in Castleton in Castleton from his father on 10 Apr 1818. One was 200 acres, the second 150 acres, the third 40 acres, and the fourth 110 acres.¹⁷ Zadock bought in a separate deed, also for $200 three additional parcels of land in Castleton in Castleton from his father on 10 Apr 1818. One, in the south part of town was 45 acres, the second south of his former home, size not recorded, and the third 70 acres, part of his home farm.¹⁸ He also bought on the same day, for $50, his father's pew in the Castleton meeting house.¹⁹
     Also on 10 Apr 1818, Zadock borrowed from his father $2,000, signing a mortgage on the 70-acre section of the home farm. The loan was to be cancelled if he supported his father and his wife for their natural life, and paid certain of his father's debts.²⁰
     Zadock appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, with a household consisting of two white males under age 10 (sons Elkanah and John), one age 16 to 26 (unknown), and one age 26 to 45 (himself), one white females age 10 to 16 (unknown), one age 16 to 26 (wife Sophia.)²¹
     He was probably the male age 40 to 50 listed in the household of his father, Zadock Remington, in the 1830 Federal Census of Rutland Co., Vermont. His wife, Sophia, and their sons Elkanah and John and daughter Mary also appear to have been in the household.²²
     Zadock died on 1 Aug 1830 in Castleton, Vermont, at age 40.^10,11 He was buried in Congregational Cemetery, Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.¹²
     On 28 Sep 1830 the Probate Court for Fairhaven District appointed John Mason and Augustus Finney as commissioners to receive claims against his estate, which was represented as insolvent. They advertised that they would receive claims on the first Wednesday of Feb and Mar 1831 at the home of his widow in Castleton.²³
     On 7 Jan 1835 Sophia and Zimri Howe, as administrators for Zadock's estate, obtained permission from the Probate Court to sell as much real estate as required to raise $360.19 for payment of the debts and expenses of the estate. On 17 Jan 1835 they sold four acres to Almeron Branch for $140. On 6 Jun 1836 they sold six acres 49 rods to Benjamin F. Langdon for $250.64.²⁴
