Sophia Cobb

Narrative:

     Sophia Cobb was born on 15 Oct 1793 in Wells, Vermont.^3,4
     Her father died on 10 Aug 1795, when Sophia was less than two years old.^6,7,8
     She was probably one of the two females under age 10 listed in the household of her mother, Mary Willard, in the 1800 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.⁹
     Sophia married Zadock Remington Jr. son of Zadock Remington, her mother's second husband, and his third wife, Anne Clark.^5,2
     She was probably the female age 16 to 26 listed in the household of her husband, Zadock Remington Jr., in the 1820 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, even though she was actually 27.¹⁰
     She was probably the female age 30 to 40 appearing on the 1830 Federal Census of Rutland Co., Vermont, in the household of Zadock Remington, her husband's father. Her husband, Zadock Jr. and their sons Elkanah and John and daughter Mary also appears to have been in the household.¹¹
     Her husband died on 1 Aug 1830 in Castleton, Vermont.^12,13
     On 28 Sep 1830 the Probate Court for Fairhaven District appointed John Mason and Augustus Finney as commissioners to receive claims against her late husband's estate, which was represented as insolvent. They advertised that they would receive claims on the first Wednesday of Feb and Mar 1831 at her home in Castleton.¹⁴
     On 31 Mar 1836 Sophia sold to B. Franklin Langden for $600, her one-third undivided interest for her natural life in 83 acres in Castleton which she had received as her dower right in her late husband's estate. She was shown on the deed as living in Castleton.¹⁵
     No further record of Sophia has been found. She is not found as head of household in 1840, nor with any of her siblings or children then or later. She may have died after 1836, or re-married. Few vital records from Castleton in this period can be found. No death records have been found, and only two marriage records from the 1836 until 1855, so either is possible.
