Narrative:
Charles Asbury Bacon was born on 15 Feb 1807 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.5,6,7He was probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Lyddall Bacon, in the 1810 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., Virginia.14 He was probably one of the three males age 10 to 16 listed in the household of his father in the 1820 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., Virginia.15
He taught school for about five years.4
Charles married first Susannah Rowlett, daughter of Matthew J. Rowlett and Martha Pleasants, on 12 Feb 1831 in Halifax Co., Virginia.8,9
Charles and Susannah moved to Montgomery Co., Tennessee, in Dec 1832 with their infant son Thomas. They settled on a farm which at the time contained the first block house built in the region.4 He was involved in farming in Virginia, and continued farming after he moved west.16
After only a year they moved to Christian Co., Kentucky, settling near Lafayette.17,18 After about two years they moved to Garrettsburg, just as the town was being laid out.4 Charles and Susannah moved to Beverly in 1838.4 In the fall of 1839 he sold his farm and they returned to Lafayette.4 He went into the mercantile business there.4,16,19
Charles appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Lafayette, Christian Co., Kentucky, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Charles), two age 5 to 10 (Matthew and Thomas), two age 20 to 30 (unknown), and one age 30 to 40 (himself), one female age 5 to 10 (unknown), and one age 30 to 40 (wife Susannah). There were also four slaves, one male under age 10, one 36 to 55, and two females age 10 to 25.20
His wife died on 11 Oct 1841.11,21
Charles returned to Garrettsburg in 1842.4 He continued in the mercantile business there.4
Charles married second Margaret Gaines Gibson, daughter of Pitman Gibson and Susan [surname unknown], on 17 Dec 1844 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee, with Samuel D. Baldwin officiating.10,11,12
Charles and Margaret moved to Roaring Spring, Trigg Co., in 1846.4 He put up the first store built there. He merchandised there until 1854 when he sold out his stock and focused on farming. He had previously purchased 100 acres adjoining the town, which he later increased to 295.4,22,23,24,25
Charles and Margaret appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 15 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,134. Their children Malcolm and John were listed as living with them, as were his children by a prior marriage, Thomas, Matthew and Charles, as well as Cornelia C. Radcliff, her daughter by a previous marriage. Also listed in were William B. Bacon, his brother; James D. Landrum, a physician, apparently a boarder; and John D. Fords, age 15, relationship unknown; and six slaves, three males and three females.1,26
Charles and Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Cadiz, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 30 Sep 1860, reporting real estate valued at $5,000, and personal estate of $11,800. Their children Malcolm, John and Hilary and his son by his prior marriage Charles were listed as living with them, as were his brother William, and E. M. Rice, a 53-year-old plasterer. There were also 15 slaves, ranging in age from 29 years to 10 months.27,28
Charles and Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Roaring Spring, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 19 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $6,000 and personal estate of $5,000. Their son Malcolm was listed as living with them, Their son John and his wife, and Charles' brother William, were apparently living close by as they were listed next.29
Charles and Margaret appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roaring Spring, Trigg Co., Kentucky, enumerated 4 Jun 1880. Their children Malcolm and John were listed as living with them, as were her daughter by her previous marriage, Cornelia, her husband Pat Clark and her daughter by her prior marriage, Cornie Ogburn, and Cora Greenwade, a servant. His brother William was entered and crossed off, because he had died in May.30
His wife died on 13 Nov 1880.31
Charles died in Jan 1886 at age 78.13
