Narrative:

Jack William Wiest was born on 13 Jan 1904 in Friedrichsfield, Russia.8,9,10
Friedrichsfeld, Russia, now known as Rosdol, Ukraine, was a settlement established by ethnic Germans who left their homelands in the late-18th and early-19th centuries at the behest of Emperor Alexander I of Russia and settled in territories off the north coast of the Black Sea. Changing political conditions and growing hostilities towards Germans from Russia later caused many to migrate to Canada, the United States and Argentina.18
Jack arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, with his parents, Johann Wiest and Elizabeth Schmidt, on 12 Jul 1907, aboard the S. S. Cymric, having departed Liverpool 3 Jul 1907.19,20,21 He apparently used the German spelling Jakob W. Wiest originally, and adopted the Americanized spelling Jacob after immigrating. But as an adult he universally used the name Jack.22,23,24
Jack William Wiest appeared on the 1910 Federal Census North Dakota in the household of his parents, Johann Wiest and Elizabeth Schmidt.5 He appeared on the 1915 State Census of St. Paul, Stutsman Co., North Dakota, in the household of household of his parents.25 He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Neburry Twp., Stutsman Co., North Dakota, in the household of his parents.26
It appears that as they grew older Jack and his brothers attempted to conceal their actual birth place. In the 1930, 1940 and 1950 census John reported that he had been born in North Dakota, and gave the same information to his nephew Lee Pound when he was researching the family history in the late 1960's. Jack reported the same in the 1940 census and his WWII draft card, and his death records show that he was born in that state as well. Henry reported in 1940 that he was born in Montana and in 1950 he was born in North Dakota. The reason may well have been the widespread antipathy toward eastern Europeans after the first World War.27,28,29,30,31,32,33
Jack appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Barrington, Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of Katharina and John L. Ebel, his sister and her husband.34 He was a laborer at a country club.35
Jack married Lydia Ebel, daughter of Ludwig Ebel and Christina Paff, and younger sister of John L. Ebel, who married Jack's sister Katharina on 11 Jun 1937 in Stutsman Co., North Dakota.11,12,13
Jack and Lydia moved to California before 1940. They appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Red Bluff Twp., Tehama Co., California, enumerated 23 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, but paid no rent. Their daughter was listed as living with them, They reported that he had lived in Kane Co., Illinois in 1935 and she had lived in Stutsman Co., North Dakota.36
He was a farm laborer in California. He reported he had worked 70 hours the last week of March, and had worked 52 weeks the prior year, earning $780.37
Jack and Lydia moved to Willows, California, about 1941.
Jack joined North Valley Tractor Company, owned by his brothers John and Henry, and John's brother-in-law William Frederick Glabe, as a salesman, by 1942.38 He registered for the draft for World War II on 14 Feb 1942, while living at Sacramento and Wood Sts., Willows, Glenn Co., California, reporting he was employed by North Valley Tractor and Equipment Co.2
Jack and Lydia moved to Chico, California, by 1945. By 1948 they were living at 1124 Warner, and by 1950 had moved to Centennial Ave. They have not been found in the 1950 census.39
He was continued as a salesman for North Valley Tractor until the firm failed about 1952, then held the same position with the successor firm, Chico Tractor, for many years.40
Jack died on 9 Aug 1967 in Butte Co., California, at age 63.14,15,16 He was buried in Glen Oaks Memorial Park, Chico, Butte Co., California.17
