     Max Richard Gapsch was born on 19 Feb 1863 in Leisnig, Königreich Sachsen.4,5,6
     Max arrived on 15 Mar 1882, aboard the Etiopia from Glasgow.2 He filed a Declaration of Intention to be come naturalized on 28 Jan 1884 in St. Louis, Missouri, but apparently didn't complete the process before moving to San Francisco.7 He was naturalized on 11 Jan 1892 in San Francisco, California.2
     He applied for a passport in San Francisco, California, on 26 Apr 1893.2 He apparently made the anticipated trip to Germany, and upon his return arrived in New York with Georg Albert Gapsch, on 1 Sep 1893 on the Augusta Victoria, having departed Hamburg 24 Aug 1893, traveling in steerage class.8,9,10
     He was a cook.2,11,12
     Research Note, 11 May 2008: It would seem quite possible that Max Richard Gapsch and Georg Albert Gapsch were brothers. Max went to Germany in 1893 and returned with Albert, who was four years younger, both returning to San Fancisco. No further record of Max has been found.13,14
