     Hewitt Hanson Howland was born on 8 Oct 1863 in Indianapolis, Indiana.7,8,9
     He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, John D. Howland and Desdemona Harrison.20
     His father died on 5 Dec 1877, when Hewitt was 14 years old.21 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, in the household of his mother, Desdemona Harrison.22
     Hewitt married first Mary Alice Gates, daughter of Alfred B. Gates and Elizabeth Murdock, on 18 Oct 1888 in Marion Co., Indiana.10,11
     Hewitt and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, in the household of his wife's parents. There were also three servants listed in the household.23
     He was an editor at the Bobbs-Merrill Publishing Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, from 1900 until he moved to New York in 1925.24,25,26,27
     Mary was granted a divorce from Hewitt in late Apr 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by Judge Leachers.12,13,14

     Hewitt and Manie settled in Indiana after their marriage.29 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, in the household of his older brother, Louis, along with their sister, Caroline, and a 48-year-old black cook.30
     Hewitt and Manie moved to New York in 1925, where he became editor of Century magazine. He was later fiction editor of the Century Publishing Company.6,31
     Hewitt and Manie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of New York, New York, at 177 E 77th, enumerated 23 Apr 1930, reporting that they rented their home, for $141 per month. Also listed in the household are two Irish servants, a cook and a maid.32
     He was an author's representative for Jaques J. Chambrun, literary agent, by 1940, reporting in 1940 he had worked 45 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $1,200.33,34
     Hewitt and Manie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of New York, New York Co., New York, at 117 East 77 St., enumerated 3 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $91 per month, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935.35
     Hewitt died on 10 May 1944 in Manhattan, New York Co., New York, at age 80.18,19
