William Stoddard was born about 1779 in Massachusetts.5,6 He married Abigail Cobb, daughter of Capt. Joshua Cobb and Hannah Edgerton, on 18 Jan 1802 in Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont, with Gideon Adams, Justice of the Peace, officiating. Her sister Polly married his brother Grove.7,8 Abigail and William moved to Oneida Co., in central New York, after their marriage. Her sister, and his brother, Polly and Grove, also moved there, although it is not clear whether they moved at the same time or if one followed the other.11 (See map.)
William appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Vernon, Oneida Co., New York, with a household consisting of two males under age 10, one age 10 to 15, and one age 26 to 45 (William), two females under age 10, one age 10 to 15, one age 16 to 25, and one age 26 to 45 (wife Abigail Cobb.)12
William Stoddard and Abigail Cobb returned to Pawlet by 1840.13 William appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont, with a household consisting of one male aged 15 to 20 and one age 20 to 30 (one of them son Henry and the other unknown), one age 60 to 70 (William), one female age 15 to 20, one age 20 to 30, one age 30 to 40, and one aged 50 to 60 (wife Abigail.)14
William and Abigail appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 24 Oct 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,400. Their son Henry was listed as living with them, as was his wife, Mary, and their daughter Eliza.2
     He was a farmer.15,16,17
William filed a petition 29 May 1852 as administrator of his mother's estate, for the widow's pension for his father's Revolutionary War service. Apparently she had never filed for that benefit after his death.18
William died on 9 Nov 1854.9 He was buried in Pawlet Cemetery, Pawlet, Vermont.10

Children:
     Children with Abigail Cobb

The number of unidentified children in the household in the 1820, and 1840 census suggests that William and Abigail likely had other children beyond the one listed here.
