Narrative:

Heinrich Wilhelm Herfurt was born about 1839 in Königreich Sachsen.5
     Heinrich married Christana [surname unknown].6
He sponsored the baptism of Robert Edward Gapsch, his sister's son on 13 Sep 1863 in St. Äegidien-Kirche, Altenhof, Königreich Sachsen.7
In Saxony his occupation was recorded as a Handarbeiters, literally "one who works with his hands," probably better translated as "day laborer."8,9
Heinrich and Christana arrived in New York on 23 Mar 1881, with their children Herman, Pauline, Gustav, Auguste and Emma, on the steamship Weser, having departed from the port of Bremen. They were shown on the passenger list as from Saxony, with a stated destination of St. Louis, and having traveled in steerage. His sister, Sophie, and her husband and their children traveled with them.10
The family lived in the St. Louis area for a while, but after the death of his wife, Heinrich moved west with his older children, Pauline, Herman, Gustav and Auguste. He left the youngest, Emma, with a doctor in Afton. They started west with his nephew, Robert Edward Gapsch. But the Harfurths apparently got as far as Oklahoma, while Robert continued to Oregon. There seems to have been no further contact with the family after that.11
