     Herschell Porter Smith was born on 30 May 1862 in Smith Grove, Kentucky.4,5,6
     He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Smiths Grove, Warren Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents, Alexander Hannibal Smith and Rebecca Shobe.10 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Smiths Grove, Warren Co., Kentucky, in the household of his parents.11
     Herschell moved to Wellington, Kansas, by the time of his marriage.12
     Herschell married Corinne Acklin Tuck, daughter of Dr. Henry Davis Tuck and Elizabeth John A. Smith, on 30 May 1887 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Christian Co., Kentucky, with Rev. W. F. Perry officating.7,8,9
     Herschell settled in Kansas after their marriage, remaining their until their first child was born there, in 1890. They evidently moved several times in the next few years. No details of their residences have been found, but a child was born in Macon, Georgia in 1891, and another in Houston, Texas, in 1893. They settled Louisville before 1900.

     Herschell and Corinne appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, at 1616½ W. Walnut St., enumerated 1 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Lois, Landon, Corinne and Herschell were listed as living with them.13

     Herschell and Corinne appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky, at 1246 Brooks St., enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Lois and Landon were listed as living with them.15
     Herschell and Corinne appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Jefferson Co., Kentucky, in the household of their son Landon and his wife Eva.16

     Herschell died on 11 Mar 1934 in Jefferson Co., Kentucky, at age 71.2 He was buried on 13 Mar 1934 in Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky.2
