Narrative:
Inez Elizabeth James was born on 6 May 1891 in Mt. Pleasant, Isabella Co., Michigan.9,10,11Her parents were divorced when she was young, but just when is unknown. They were at least separated by 1900, when she was 9 years old.17,18 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mt. Pleasant, Isabella Co., Michigan, in the household of her mother, Jessie L. Ferris.7
About 1903 she went to live with a sister of her mother and her husband on a farm in Iowa.19 She appeared on the 1905 State Census of Bangor Twp., Marshall Co., Iowa, in the household of G. A. Bartholomew and his wife Elmira.20,21,22
As a teenager she rejoined her mother on a dairy farm in Arkansas.23 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Prairie Twp., Washington Co., Arkansas, in the household of her mother and stepfather, Franklin Cotton Cowles.24
She attended a business college where she learned office skills. The school found her a job in Abilene, where she worked until she married.23
Inez married first Maxwell Cobb Kirkpatrick, son of Moses Clark Kirkpatrick and Carrie Imogene Maxwell, on 6 Nov 1913 in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas.12,13,14
Maxwell was a a traveling salesman for a wholesale grocery company, which required extensive travel and frequent relocations of the family. We know they were located in Sweetwater and Synder, Scurry Co., before 1920.25,26,27
Inez and Maxwell appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Corpus Christi, Nueces Co., Texas, at 1019 Bayview Ave., enumerated 10 Jan 1920, reporting that the family rented its home. Their children Maxwell, Hugh and Elizabeth were listed as living with them.28
Inez and Maxwell moved to Eastland Co. about 1921.29 He died on 31 Aug 1922 in Ranger, Eastland Co., Texas.9,30
Inez returned to Abilene with her three children after her husband's death.23 She opened a boarding house using the proceeds of her husband's life insurance. Finding that unsatisfactory as a means of support she took an office job, as a stenographer in an insurance office.23,31
Inez appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas, at 721 Hickory St., enumerated 17 Apr 1930, reporting that she owned her home, valued at $15,000, and a radio. Her children Maxwell, Hugh and Elizabeth were listed as living with her.32
Inez married second Dr. Charles Wesley Dunn, son of Thomas Dunn and Elizabeth Turner, on 27 Aug 1933 in Shackelford Co., Texas, with Rev. J. H. Hombler officating.15,16
Inez and Charles appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas, at 721 Hickory, enumerated 5 Apr 1940, reporting that they owned a home valued at $3,500. Her daughter Elizabeth was listed as living with her, as was her mother, Jessie L. Ferris. The reported that they all had lived in the same city in 1935.33
Inez died on 13 Nov 1960 in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas, at age 69.2 She was buried on 14 Nov 1960 in Elmwood Memorial Park.2
