     Chester Root was born on 11 Feb 1778 in Montague, Massachusetts.5,6
     Chester married first Betsey Lathrop, daughter of Thomas Lathrop and Wealthy Ann Cobb, on 11 Mar 1811.7,8,9
     His wife died on 9 Oct 1812.14,15
     Chester was a first Lieutenant and aid on the general staff of the Northern Army, commanded by Major-General George Izard in the war of 1812, stationed in Burlington, Vermont.16 He married second Mary Lathrop, younger sister of his late wife, on 4 Jul 1814.10,11,12
     Chester appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Williston, Chittenden Co., Vermont, with a household consisting of one white male under age 10 (son Hiram), one age 26 to 45 (himself), one white female under age 10 (daughter Abigail), and one age 26 to 45 (his second wife Mary.)17
     At some point between 1820 and 1850 Chester and Mary moved south to Addison Co., Vermont. Just when is not clear since no evidence of where they were living in between has been found. (See map.) He and Mary appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Monkton, Addison Co., Vermont, enumerated 30 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $4,000.3
     Chester and Mary moved between 1850 and 1860 to Palmyra, in northwestern New York, and where their son Thomas and his family were living.
     Chester and Mary Lathrop appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York, in the household of Thomas Lathrop Root and Mary Sophia Gordon, their son and his wife.18
     He was a farmer.19,18,3
     Chester died on 15 Sep 1861 at age 83.1,13 He was buried in Palmyra Village Cemetery, Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York.13
