Narrative:

Emily W. Schroth was born on 25 Jun 1877 in Aldorf, GermanyG.4,5,6
     Emily arrived in New YorkG on 12 Nov 1903, aboard the S.S. Main, having departed from Bremien 31 Oct. She appears to have been traveling alone, and stated she had been living in Aldorft, had $25 in her possession, and intended to join her brother Richard in Brooklyn.13,14,15
     Emily said in her application for citizenship that she had moved to PennsylvaniaG 15 Oct 1907 and had lived there contentiously since.16 But when she traveled to Germany in 1910, when returning to New YorkG she said she was going to join her cousin, Georg Bey, in New York City. She arrived aboard the S.S. Blücher on 6 Oct 1910, having departed Hamburg 25 Sep, apparently traveling by herself.17 She again traveled to Germany in 1913, returning aboard the S.S. Prinz Oskar, and again apparently traveling by herself. She arrived in Philadelphia on 4 Oct 1913, having departed Hamburg 21 Sep, and said she was going to join her sister Sofie in Philadelphia.18
     Emily filed a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen in U.S. District Court in PhiladelphiaG on 22 Mar 1915.19,20 After waiting the required three years, she filed a Petition for Naturalization 16 Aug 1918. One of the two witnesses on her behalf was John Stein, her future husband, who stated he had known her since 1 Aug 1913.16 She was admitted as a citizen by the court on 14 May 1920.21
     She was a maid in New York and Philadelphia before her marriage.22,23,24,25 She appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania G, enumerated 4 Jan 1920, in the household of H. Dannenbaum, his daughter and her husband, where she is listed as a maid, along with a cook and a chambermaid.26
     Emily married first John Stein in 1922 in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaG.7,8,9
     Emily and John Stein appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania G, at 4262 N. Reese St., enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting they owned a home valued at $3,000 and owned a radio.27
     Her husband died on 9 Oct 1931 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PennsylvaniaG.28
     Emily married second William F. Guenther in 1935 in Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaG.10,11
     Emily and William appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, at 5424 No. Fairhill St. G, enumerated 8 May 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $4,100, and had lived in the same house in 1935.29
     William died on 1 Oct 1951 in 5424 No. Fairhill St., Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PennsylvaniaG.30
     Emily died on 19 Sep 1955 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PennsylvaniaG, at age 78.12 She was buried on 22 Sep 1955 in Hillside Cemetery, Roslyn, Montgomery Co., PennsylvaniaG.12
