Narrative:

Frederick J. Shurtz was born in 1832 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.4,5
Frederick appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 10 Aug 1850, in the household of Daniel Keller, a blacksmith, and his wife and family. That Frederick is listed as a blacksmith at age 18 suggests he may have been an apprentice or assistant to Keller.17
Frederick married first Margaret Ann Derr, daughter of Daniel Derr and Catharine Raup, on 24 Jul 1852 in Turbotville, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.6,7,8
Frederick and Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 20 Jul 1860, reporting no real estate but $2,000 in personal estate. Their children Sarah, Mary, Margaret, Perry, Anna and Horace were listed as living with them, as was Catherine Shurts, age 66, who may have been his mother.1
Frederick and Margaret moved to St. Joseph Co., Michigan, about 1864 with their eight children, Sarah, Mary, Margaret, Perry, Anna, Horace, Mattie and Clara.18
His wife died on 18 Sep 1865 in Constantine, St. Joseph Co., Michigan.6,19
Frederick married second Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, daughter of Jacob K. Riegel and Christiana Ohl, on 1 Oct 1867 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, with Rev. Henry Wiegard officiating.9,10,11
Frederick and Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Centerville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, enumerated 2 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $8,500 and personal estate of $1,000. His children Mary, Margaret, Perry, Anna, Horace, Martha and Clara by his first marriage and their daughter Elenora were listed as living with them, as was James Myer, age 77, a farm laborer.20
Frederick and Sarah moved to Iowa about 1880 with at least eleven of their children. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Fisher Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. His children Horace and Clara by his first marriage, and their children Elenora, Harry, Charles, Edwin, Wilmer, Calvin and Mable were listed as living with them.21
Frederick and Sarah appeared on the 1885 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa. His children Rachel and Anna by his first marriage, and their children Elenora, Harry, Charles, Edwin, Wilmer and John were listed as living with them, as was Christopher Feather, age 44, no occupation shown and relationship unknown.22
Frederick apparently gave up blacksmithing after his early training in that trade. He reported his occupation as a farmer by 1860. He continued to farm when he moved to Michigan, apparently quite successfully, judging from the size of his assets there in 1870.23,24,25
The Federal government passed a series of acts to raise revenue during the Civil War, including provisions for both excise and progressive income taxes. Frederick's name appears in a tax list dated May 1863 showing he had an annual income of $7,000 and owed $210 in tax.26
Frederick J. Shurtz continued to farm when he moved in Fremont Co., Iowa, but after moving to Page Co. he was listed as a laborer.27,28,29
Frederick died on 18 May 1892 in Shenandoah, Iowa.12,13,14 He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.15,16
