Narrative:

Jacob K. Riegel was born about 20 Sep 1816 in Pennsylvania. While his birthplace has not been documented fully, he reported it as in Pennsylvania in the 1850 census, as did some of his descendants. Others, however, came to believe he was born in Germany, and reported it accordingly.5,6,7,8,9,10
Jacob married Christiana Ohl, daughter of John Ohl and Margaret [surname unknown].11,12,13 The earliest record of Jacob that has been found is his purchase of three acres and 116 perches in Turbut Twp. (now spelled Turbot Twp.) from Philip Newcomer on 11 Mar 1844. The property was mortgaged for $600 to John Kissinger, with $300 to be repaid with interest on 1 Apr 1846.15,16 He and Christiana sold that property to Martha Riddle on 22 Mar 1848.17 The mortgage was declared fully satisfied 5 Nov, 1849, over a year after Jacob had sold the property.17,16
Jacob and his family seems to have been living in Turbut Twp. prior to buying the property there in 1844, as he is referred to as "of Turbut" Twp. in the mortgage for that property. But it would appear they lived in White Deer Twp., Union Co., Pennsylvania, after they sold that property in Mar 1848 until buying another property in Turbut Twp. in Apr 1849, since Jacob is referred to as "of White Deer" Twp. in the mortgage on that property.18
That parcel was one acre and nine perches, purchased from John Haag. The land was mortgaged to the seller on 2 Apr 1849 to secure a loan of $430, presumably part of the purchase payment. The mortgage called for payments of $50 on 1 Apr of 1850, 1851, and 1852, and of $65 on 1 Apr 1853, totaling half the stated amount.19
While no other record has been found, it would appear that Jacob purchased additional land at some point, because his property at his death included over four acres.
Jacob and Christiana appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Turbut Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 20 Aug 1850. Their children Sarah, Violetta, John, Christiana, William and Benjamin were listed as living with them.20

Signs of Ill Health --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

He was apparently a laborer, as that is how he is identified on his mortgage in 1844.21 But the 1850 census seems to show his occupation as "none." His large debts when he died, including an apparently substantial doctor's bill, $19.12, suggest he was in ill health for some time before he died.22,23 He owed John Haag $365 plus interest from 1 Apr 1857, suggesting he was paying the interest, but perhaps not keeping up with the principal payments on the mortgage. But it is likely he had borrowed an additional amount, as the property he held at his death was larger than the amount recorded in the original mortgage.24,25

Leaving a Messy Estate --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Jacob died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 29 Sep 1857 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, to Charles Hollenstein, after the widow declined to serve. He posted a bond of $500, with George Bright and Frederick Haas as sureties.26
An "Inventory by Widow" was filed on 16 Oct 1857 in Orphans Court, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, reporting that Christiana elected to receive the land, but it was worth more than her widow's entitlement and could "not be divided without spoiling the whole." She did claim, as part of her $300 widow's claim, personal property valued at $78.15.27,28
The Administrator of Jacob's estate filed a petition for approval to sell his land, which was approved on 5 Nov 1857 in Orphans Court, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania. According to the petition, he owned a messuage, or homestead, of four acres and 159 perches, but owed some $445 in various debts. Since the estate was insufficient to pay the debts and the widow's claim, the administrator requested permission to sell the land.29,30 The property was sold at auction, for $710, to his father, Jacob Riegel on 18 Dec 1857.31,32 Declaring the estate insolvent, the Administrator petitioned for an auditor to distribute the assets, which was approved on 9 Nov 1858 by the Orphans Court, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.33
A complete accounting of the Administrator's disbursements has not been found, but we know that assets included the $710 from the sale of the property, sale of items not taken by the widow listed at $40.10, and other accounts of $27.07. After settling the widow's claim of $300 and mortgage of $365 plus interest since 1 Apr 1857, and perhaps other items, $106.39 remained for distribution by the auditor when he met with creditors on 4 Dec 1858 in Milton.
After deducting funeral expenses of $3.34, administrative expenses totaling $19, only $84.05 was left for creditors. They received 39 and two-thirds cents on the dollar for their claims. Among the claims was one for $5 for a coffin for a child, presumably for daughter Laura, who died after Jacob did. There was the doctor's bill of $19.12, notes, in addition to the mortgage, to three individuals for a total of $64.97. In addition, accounts due to twelve individuals, presumably merchants, totaled $89.36.34
