Attaching Your Macro to the Toolbar in Microsoft Word97

This page created 20 Feb 2001; reformatted 20 Jan 2002

Once you have recorded a Word macro (see my article on Recording Macros) you may want to attach it to a toolbar to make it easy to access. Here is the procedure to do that. These instructions use the commands in Microsoft Word97; minor adjustments may be required for other versions up to Word 2007, in which major changes in Word's user interface were made.

  1. Right click on a blank area of the toolbar, and choose Customize from the menu.
  2. On the Commands tab of the Customize dialog box, select Macros under Categories.
  3. Under Commands, look for your new macro. It may be difficult to identify, because it will probably be listed under TemplateProject.NewMacros.YourMacroName, and this title is so long that only the first letter of you macro name may be visible.
  4. Drag the macro from the dialog box to the toolbar where you want it to appear.
  5. You will now have a "button" on the toolbar wide enough for the very long name to appear.
  6. With that button selected, click Modify Selection, and choose Default Style – this will change the button to a standard macro icon.
  7. You can click Modify Selection again, and choose Change Button Image, and select from a small library of standard buttons. Or, you can choose Edit Button Image and create your own icon.
