In April, 1866, at age 66, Simeon Cobb, an apparently successful farmer in Whitewater, Wisconsin, undertook a dangerous overland trip by wagon train to the west, reportedly for his health.1 It appears his objective might have been California.2 But after nearly four months of overland travel he took sick as the party reached Salt Lake City, and died there six weeks later.3,4
