Lucy L. Scanlan

Narrative:

     Lucy L. Scanlan was born on 27 Nov 1868 in St. Paul, Indiana.^9,10,11,12
     She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Noble Twp., Shelby Co., Indiana, in the household of her parents, John L. Scanlan and Ellen Cornelly.²⁰ She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Noble Twp., Shelby Co., Indiana, in the household of her parents.⁷
     Lucy has not been found in the 1900 census, when she would have been about 32 years old. She was not with her parents, who were living in Center Twp., Marion Co., Indiana, nor with any of her siblings, though her brother John has not been found in 1900 either. At some point she lived in Cincinnati, but when is unknown.^22,23

     On 16 Sep 1909 Lucy and Adolph Sander signed a pre-nuptial agreement. It stated that he was 66 years of age, owns real and personal property, has four children living from a former marriage, and wanted to make suitable provision for her in lieu of dower in his real property and in place of distributions of his estate. He agreed to convey to her a piece of real estate on Freeman Ave., reserving a life estate, and to provide her a note for $20,000 payable after his death. The agreement was recorded 24 Dec, along with a deed for a 23 by 90 foot lot on the east side of Freeman Ave., 25 feet south of Guest St., in consideration of $1 and release of dower in all other real estate he owned or might acquire later.²⁴
     Lucy married Adolph Sander, son of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Sander and Henriette Louise Riesmeier, on 20 Sep 1909 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at the home of her brother, Maurice, with Rev. James J. Wade of Holy Cross Church officating.^13,14,15
     As far as Adolph's grandchildren, Emilou Fenker Frazier and Richard Fenker can recall, there was surprisingly no stories of a family row when Adolph married Lucille after Katherine's the death. Richard remembers that they called her "Lou". According to family lore, the day after he died Lou appeared with her hair completely white, which she attributed to the shock of his death. Family lore also reports she was unhappy with the will, and although she insisted that she had no idea he was as wealthy as he was, she wanted more than she had been left.²⁵
     Lucy and Adolph appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 3430 Brooklyn Ave., enumerated 15 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Merianda Neudquist, a servant, was also listed in the household.²⁶
     Lucy's husband applied for a passport for himself and her 11 Mar 1911.²⁷ They returned to New York on 2 Sep 1911, aboard the S.S. Cleveland, having departed Hamburg 24 Aug.²⁸
     Lucy was mentioned in the will of her husband, dated 22 Mar 1911 in 1042 Freeman Ave., Cincinnati, in which he said he had already provided for her under the pre-neptial contract by which she received a house at 1042 Freeman Ave., Cincinnati, and $20,000.²⁹
     Her husband died on 18 Nov 1912 in 3430 Brookline Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio.^30,31
     After Adolph's death, Lucy repudiated the pre-nuptial agreement they had made, but agreed to accept $30,000 in cash, the Freeman Ave. property, and an electric automobile. She later disavowed that agreement. On 17 Mar 1913 a settlement was made in court, in which she received $45,000 cash, the Freeman Ave. property, the furniture from their home on Brookline Ave., an electric automobile, and a note for $500, in full settlement of her interests.³²
     Lucy moved to the Hotel Alms, a luxury residential hotel, by 1914. She continued to live until about 1917.³³

     Lucy applied for a passport 10 Jun 1914, stating that she lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. She said she intended to return to the United States within two years, and she was going to Genoa. The passport was issued 12 Jun 1914.³⁴
     She lived for a time about 1918 in Indianapolis, at 312 E. 13th St.³⁵
     She applied for a new passport 17 Jun 1922, stating that she lived at the Gregorian Hotel, 4 W 35th St., New York, New York. She said she had lived in Italy and Switzerland from Jun 1914 to Aug 1914. She said she intended to return to the United States within one year, and she was going to the British Isles and France, leaving New York on the America on 24 Jun 1922. The passport was issued 21 Jun. Two days later she applied for an amendment to add the additional countries Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, and Italy.³⁶
     She applied for a new passport 15 May 1924, stating that she lived at 608 Carlton Ave., Brooklyn, New York. She said she had lived in the British Isles, Germany, Belgium, Holland, and Spain from Jul 1922 to Feb 1923. She said she intended to return to the United States within 12 months, and she was going to England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, leaving New York on the President Harding on 28 May 1924. The passport was issued 19 May.²¹
     Lucy died on 31 Jul 1926 in Queens, New York Co., New York, at age 57.^16,17,18 She was buried on 3 Aug 1926 in Saint Joseph New Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.¹⁹
