     Harold Zachary Holmes was born on 27 May 1905 in Urbana, Illinois.9,10,11
     He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents, Charles Clyde Holmes and Sylvia Belle Brownfield.4 He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.5 He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.15
     Harold married Lucile Nellie Schuck, daughter of George W. Schuck and Katie Elizabeth Oetzel, on 10 Jul 1937 in Fountain Co., Indiana, with Rev. Lawrence P. Green officiating.12,13
     Harold and Lucile appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 312 Western, enumerated 18 May 1940, reporting they were renting their home, for $45 per month. It was apparently a multi-family building, as 11 other households were listed at that address. They reported she had lived in the same city in 1935, but he had lived in Chicago.16
     He was a newspaper editor in 1930. He was a reporter for the News-Gazette by 1932. In 1940 he reported he had worked as and editor 40 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year, earning $2,700.17,18,19,20 He registered for the draft for World War II on 16 Oct 1940, while living at 2 Tuscan Ct., Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, reporting he was employed by The News Gazette, in Champaign, Illinois.3 He reported in the 1950 census he had worked 48 hours the prior week and 52 weeks in 1949, earning $6,300 in wages or salary.21

He was promoted from city editor to associate editor of the News-Gazette effective on 19 Jan 1953.22
     After World War II, the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin was re-stationed on the east coast. During 1947 she was a training ship, taking naval reservists on two-week cruises which included stops at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and the Panama Canal Zone. On 28 Apr 1947 Harold departed on what was apparently one of those trips, with a group including 15 other men from various cities in the eastern U.S. ranging in age from 30 to 73. It appears this was a press group, as two of them listed publishing businesses as their U.S. address. On their return they departed Cristobal, Canal Zone, on 5 May 1947 and arrived in New York 10 May.23,24
     Harold and Lucile moved to 503 E. Washington St. by 1947.24 They appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Urbana, Champaign Co., Illinois, at 505 E Washington, enumerated 12 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm and they lived in the same house the year before.25
     His wife died on 23 May 1988.26
     Harold died on 2 Feb 1993 at age 87.14
