Walter Samuel Kiest was born on 4 Feb 1883 in Northbrook, Cook Co., Illinois.8,9,10He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Northfield Twp., Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents, Jacob Kiest and Rosena Gottschalk.6
Walter appeared as a boarder on the 1910 Federal Census of Paxton, Ford Co., Illinois, in the household of James Wesley Kisner and Katie Karr, the parents of his future wife, who was also listed as living there. Both he and his future father-in-law are shown as "makers" in an ice cream factory, and Charlotte, one of Jame's daughters, is listed as a bookkeeper there.17
Walter married Mary Ellen Kisner, daughter of James Wesley Kisner and Katie Karr, on 15 Feb 1911 in Paxton, Ford Co., Illinois.11,12
