When James moved to Texas is unknown. He was not listed with his parents in the 1870 census in Louisiana nor has he been found elsewhere.
James married first Mary Ann Fielder, daughter of George L. Fielder and Sarah E. Britton.9,10
James and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Gainesville, Cooke Co., Texas

His wife died, apparently in 1884 in Boerne, Texas

He was a butcher in 1880, and a stockman by 1900.19,20
James married second Inez [surname unknown].11
James and Inez appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Quanah, Hardeman Co., Texas, at 3 Mercer

It appears that James and Inez moved to California, as he died there and she continued to live there after his death. But when is unknown. They have not been found in the 1910 census.
James died on 29 Aug 1911 in Los Angeles Co., California
