     John Lionel Leighton was born in 1901 in Grand Marais, Michigan.9,10,11
     He moved to Chippewa Co. with his parents before 1910. He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co., Michigan, in the household of his parents, William Joseph Leighton and Mary Grace Peck.4 He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa Co., Michigan, in the household of his parents.4
     John attended Michigan State University and studied law under Supreme Court Justice Leland W. Carr.17
     John married Helen Josephine McNeill, daughter of Benjamin Franklin McNeill and Marguerite C. West, on 26 Nov 1925 in Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, with Father Clarence J. Kane officating.3,12,13
     John and Helen appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, at 1229 Mechanic St., reporting they owned a home valued at $4,000, and owned a radio. Their children were listed as living with them.18
     He was in the real estate investment business in 1930. He began his law practice in 1931, in Lansing. In 1940 when he reported he had worked 48 hours the last week of March, and 52 weeks the prior year in 1931 in Lansing.19,20,21
     John and Helen appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Lansing, Ingham Co., Michigan, at 812 West Shiawasee, enumerated 22 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $40 per month, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935.      John and Helen were living in 1368 Hickory St., Haslett, Michigan, at the time of his death.17
     John died on 2 Feb 1964 in Detroit, Michigan.14,11 He was buried on 5 Feb 1964 in Deepdale Memorial Park, Delta Township, Eaton Co., Michigan.15,16
