Melcajah R. Ferrell was born about 1841 in Virginia
His father apparently died before 1850, when Melcajah was about 9 years old.5,9

He was a cabinet maker before the War.11
Melcajah enlisted as a private in Capt. J. Grammer Jr.'s company, Montague's Battalion at Halifax Courthouse, Virginia

He was wounded at the battle of Malvern Hill, 1 Jul 1862, near Richmond. He was admitted to General Hospital No. 21, in Richmond, the next day. He was given a 30-day furlough on July 5.14 He died 23 Jun 1863 in the hospital at Culpeper Courthouse. Cause of death is not stated in the record, but this was three months before the battle there, so it may have been from disease rather than from wounds in battle.8
