Narrative:

     Joseph Coleman Terry Jr. was born on 13 Jan 1844 in Halifax Co., Virginia.6,7,8,9
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Berryman G. Terry and Elvira E. Reekes.16 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents.17
     He enlisted 30 Sep 1861 in Catawba, Virginia, as a private in Wise's Brigade, Co. K, 26th Regiment, Virginia Infantry.18,19,20
     Joseph was sick enough in Jun 1862 to be sent to a hospital in Atlanta. He returned to duty and was promoted to 5th sergeant on 1 Aug 1862.21 He was promoted to 1st sergeant 1 Jul 1864.22
     Joseph was wounded 7 Jul 1864 in the trenches in front of Petersburg, and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 5 in Atlanta the following day. He was wounded in the left thigh, fracturing the bone. It healed with an overlap, resulting in that leg being two inches shorter than the other.23,24,25
     Joseph was furloughed from the hospital on 2 Oct 1864 for 60 days, which was extended for 30 days, then extended again until 2 Mar 1865.26
     His unit was evidently captured or surrendered in the closing days of the war, as he was paroled as a prisoner of war in Richmond on 27 May 1865. He was recorded as being in Washington two days later and staying there for a time.27,28
     Joseph married Mary S. A. Perkerson, daughter of Fielding James Perkerson and Elizabeth Ann Flora, on 25 Aug 1878 in Halifax Co., Virginia.10,11,12
     Joseph and Mollie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Banister District, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them, as was her sister, Jennie.29
     He applied for a disability pension based on his Civil War service on 23 Apr 1888, while living in South Boston. He claimed partial disability, being unable to work on the farm or do other manual labor due to his leg injury. He asked for $15 annually, but his claim was not approved.30
     He was a farmer in 1880, and a telegraph operator by 1900.29,31,32
     Joseph and Mollie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Macon Twp., Powhatan Co., Virginia, enumerated 6 Jun 1900, reporting they were renting their farm. Their children Nora, Berryman, Alexander, Thadeus, Ruth, Joseph and Maude were listed as living with them.33
     Joseph filed a claim for a full disability pension on 3 Nov 1908, while he was living in Tobaccoville, Powhatan Co., Virginia. He said he had worked as a telegraph operator until nine months before, but was now totally disabled by partial paralysis and his wounded leg. He requested a full pension of $30 annually, which was approved.34
     Joseph died on 21 Jan 1910 at age 66.13,14 He was buried in Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia.15
