     Norman Orlando Bucher was born on 11 Sep 1880 in Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania.4,5,6,7
     Norman enlisted in the U.S. Army on 17 Apr 1899 at Milton, Pennsylvania, and was assigned to Troop L, 5th Cavalry, as a private. He served in Puerto Rico from 2 May 1899 until 7 Aug 1900.10,11 He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, serving as a private at Port Mayaguez.2
     Norman was stationed at Ft. Myer, Washington, from 7 Aug 1900 to 10 Mar 1901, then in the Philippines from 18 Mar 1901 until 27 Apr 1902.12 He was discharged at the expiration of his enlistment on 2 May 1902, at Angel Island, California, with a rating of "excellent."13
     Norman married Mary Idella Bressler, daughter of Ferdinand B. Bressler and Hannah C. Newman, on 17 Oct 1908 in Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church, McEwensville, Pennsylvania.8,9
     Norman and Mary appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Milton, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, at 425 Columbia Ave., enumerated 22 Apr 1910, reporting they were renting their home.14
