     Sarah Catharine Shurtz was born on 27 May 1853 in Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.6,7,8 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of her parents, Frederick J. Shurtz and Margaret Ann Derr.13
     She moved to St. Joseph Co., Michigan, about 1864 with her parents.14
     Her mother died on 18 Sep 1865, when Sarah was 12 years old.9,15
     Sarah appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, enumerated 6 Aug 1870, in the household of David Welcomwood and his family, listed as a domestic servant. He was an apparently successful farmer, with real estate valued at $7,000 and personal estate of $800.16
     Sarah appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 29 Jun 1880, in the household of A. S. Lake, a loan agent, and his wife and two children. She and M. A. Duffye, age 37, were listed as servants.17
     Sarah died on 8 Dec 1883 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at age 30.9,10,11 She was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.12
