Thomas and Henry McNeill
from papers of Lettie (Judkins) McNeill18

Thomas appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents, Thomas Henry McNeill and Nannie Hammond.5
The family has not been found in the 1910 census, though all evidence suggests they were living in Chicago.
Thomas registered for the draft for World War I on 7 Jun 1917, while living at 2250 Jackson Blvd, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, reporting he was employed as a clerk, by Standard Oil of Indiana, in Chicago.1
Thomas served in the U.S. Army in World War I, enlisting 15 Dec 1917.19 He served in the European theater, achieving the rank of sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps. He returned from Brest, France, departing 10 Sep 1919 aboard the U.S.S. President Grant, and arriving in Brooklyn 22 Sep.6 He was released from service 29 Sep 1919.20
He appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of his parents.21
He was a clerk in a store in 1920, and by 1930 had become a real estate manager, taking over the firm his father had managed. He continued to use the firm name McNeill Brothers. No advertising has been found with the name of the firm after his father's death. The firm seems to have limited itself to managing the family's buildings, now owned by his father's estate and the descendants of his father's brother Rivers and sister Ellen.22,23,24
His father's estate was probated 8 Aug 1925. Under his will the entire estate, reported to be worth $400,000, was to pass to their mother for her lifetime. At her death it was to be divided equally between him and his brother Henry.25
He appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of his mother.26 He appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, in the household of his mother.27
Thomas registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942, while living at 850 Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, reporting he was employed by himself.28 His brother Henry was working for him.29
He had offices in the McNeill building, at 325 W. Jackson Blvd.. In 1940 he reported he had worked 51 hours the last week of March, and had worked 52 weeks the prior year, earning $3,600. He retired from the business in 1956.30,31
Thomas married Frances E. Shepherd, daughter of William Finley Shepherd and Elizabeth E. Cunningham, on 12 Nov 1956 in Oak Park, Cook Co., Illinois.12,13
No clear record has been found of where Thomas and Frances settled after their marriage. Her obituary describes her as "of Oak Park," where she taught for many years, so they may have lived there after they married.32
His wife died on 27 Jan 1962.33,34,35
Thomas was living with his brother Henry, at 512 Andrews Ave., Delray Beach, Florida, at the time of his death. No record has been found of how long he had been living there.36
Thomas died on 5 Dec 1979 in Palm Beach Co., Florida, at age 89.14,15,16 He was buried in Palm Beach Memorial Park, Lantana, Palm Co., Florida.17
