Narrative:

     James Brice Martin was born on 11 Jul 1858 in Tennessee.7,8
     He generally used his middle name, Brice, sometimes spelled Bryce.3,15,16
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Williamson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his parents, Jacob Thomas Martin and Susan E. Drake.17 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Williamson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his parents.18
     He moved to Davidson Co. with his parents before 1880. He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Davidson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his parents.19
     He was a tobacco inspector by 1880.19
     James married Pauline Elliott, daughter of Thomas Herbert Elliott and Elizabeth Mariah Tuck, on 9 Apr 1889 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee, with Rev. W. R. Peebles officating.9,10
     The family returned to Williamson Co. by 1900, whether before or after his father's death in 1897 is unknown. He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Williamson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his widowed mother, with all of her other children. Pauline is not listed with them. He seems to have been recorded as married but then overwritten as widowed. It seems likely they were living with his mother on the family farm and she had gone elsewhere in preparation of the birth of their fourth child, which occured less than a month later.
     He was listed with his mother, apparently on the family farm, in 1900. While she was listed as a farmer and his occupation was left blank, it seems likely he was actually helping on the farm. He was a farmer in his own right by 1910. He retired by 1930.20,21,22,23
     Brice and Pauline appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Maury Co., Tennessee, on Columbia Pike, enumerated 6 May 1910, reporting that they owned their farm, free of mortgage.24
     Brice and Pauline appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of San Francisco, California, at 560 Powell St., enumerated 14 Jan 1920, listed as lodgers in the apartment building managed by Maude Taylor. Why they were in San Francisco, and why he was listed as a farmer while living in the center of a major city, is unknown. Perhaps they were on an extended visit with her cousin Emma Williams Tuck, who was living four block away.25
     Brice and Pauline appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Davidson Co., Tennessee, at Porter Rd., enumerated 10 Apr 1930, reporting that they owned a home valued at $25,000, and owned a radio.26
     James died on 26 Aug 1932 on Porter Rd., Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee, at age 74, from suicide with a pistol.11,12 He was buried on 27 Aug 1932 in Martin-Critz Cemetery, Burwood, Williamson Co., Tennessee.13,14
