Narrative:

LaRue Maxey was born in Dec 1882 in Mississippi.4,5,6
LaRue appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clarksdale, Coahoma Co., Mississippi, enumerated 13 Jun 1900, reporting she was renting her home. Why she was listed as living alone when not yet 18 years old, not listed as attending school nor with an occupation, is unknown.1
LaRue graduated from the Training School for Nurses at the Louisville City Hospital, Louisville, Kentucky, in the class of 1903, in a class of eleven graduates.11 After graduation she accepted a position as superintendent of the Berlin Hospital, in Berlin, Pennsylvania.12
It seems likely that LaRue responded to a request like the one J. A. Murray, of the medical staff at the Berlin Hospital Association, sent to the City Hospital Training school in Cincinnati:
WANTED–Within a few weeks, a graduated nurse to superintend and manage a small hospital of about fifteen beds. Age, 24 to 33; height, 5 feet to 5 feet 6; weight, 118 to 145; fine personal appearance, neat and stylish; elegant form, well developed, good looking, pretty mouth, teeth and eyes; must not wear a No. 3 shoe; nice complexion; medium or light brunette; splendid health and disposition; popular with physicians and nurses; good education. Send a recent photo, with application. The former will be returned. State whether born and reared in city or country; single, married or widowed; salary expected.
P.S. – A good musician, vocal or instrumental, will be appreciated.
There were no aspirants from the Cincinnati school, but it seems the request found its way to LaRue's school. Since she was just reaching age 22 she did not meet the minimum requested age but got the appointment anyway.13
LaRue married Thomas Henry McNeill, son of Malcom M. McNeill and Eliza M. Burke, on 6 Feb 1905 in Cairo, Alexander Co., Illinois, with Rev. Edward L. Roland, rector of the Church of the Redeemer, officating.7,8
LaRue and Thomas appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Clarksdale, Coahoma Co., Mississippi, enumerated 28 Apr 1910, reporting they were renting their home. Their children Thomas, LaRue and Malcolm were listed as living with them, as were two Black cooks, Pearl Hines and Delia Hilliard, age 19 and 18 respectively, and five male boarders.14
LaRue and Thomas appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Washington Co., Mississippi, enumerated 27 Mar 1920, reporting they were renting their home. Their children Thomas, LaRue and Malcolm were listed as living with them, as was his step-mother, Willie M. Gilmore.15
LaRue and Thomas appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Washington Co., Mississippi, enumerated 6 Jul 1930, reporting they were renting their home. Their children LaRue and Malcolm were listed as living with them.16
LaRue and Thomas Henry moved to Arizona about 1932, when they were living at 342 W. Willetta St., in Phoenix. Their son Malcolm and his wife were living there with them.17 They remained in Phoenix until about 1936, when they were living at 1630 W. Vernon Ave.18
LaRue and Thomas appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, in the household of their daughter LaRue and her husband, John R. Mains. They reported they had been living in Phoenix in 1935.19
Her husband died on 23 Oct 1940.20
LaRue died on 2 Jul 1950 in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, at age 67.9,6 She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana.10
