Narrative:
Davis Weaver Cobb was born on 9 Apr 1843 in Aurora, Indiana.7,8,9He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, John Cobb and Maria Caffyn.13 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents.14
Davis registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated in Jun 1863, while living in Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana, reporting he was employed as a clerk.15
He has not been found in the 1870 census. By 1880 he had moved to Illinois. He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Crane Creek Twp., Mason Co., Illinois, enumerated 5 Jun 1880. Four farm laborers, list a hands, and 19-year-old servant were also listed in the household.16
Davis moved to Kansas by 1895. He appeared on the 1895 State Census of Pawnee Twp., Bourbon Co., Kansas, reporting he had moved there from Illinois.17
Davis appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Pawnee Twp., Bourbon Co., Kansas, at 75, enumerated 16 Jun 1900, listed as one of two boarders in the household of Mathew McNerney, his wife, and four children.16
He was a farmer in Illinois, and later in Kansas.18,19,20 He was at some point engaged in a mining venture. While details have not been found, according to his obituary, it left him financially ruined.3
Davis returned to Aurora before 1910, suffering for serious physical aliments. His brother Thomas kept him in thee family home for several years.21,22 He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana, on George St., enumerated 30 Apr 1910, reporting he owned his home. Having some of the same neighbors as listed near their mother in 1900, this was clearly the family home. But Thomas was not listed there, nor has he been found elsewhere, suggesting he was omitted in error.23
Davis was then moved to the Hartwig Kalley Assembly Home for Age and Incurable People in Indianapolis. A short time before his death he wrote a note to his brother expressing his suffering, and ending "Good bye, dear Tom, you have been good to me."3
Davis died on 29 May 1913 in 2521 Chestnut St., Indianapolis, Indiana, at age 70, at the Hartwig Kalley Home, of suicide.10 He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana.11,12
