She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her parents, Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot.1,13
Her father died about 1852, when Lucy was about 14 years old.14,15 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of her mother, Mary W. Toot, reporting personal estate of $4000, and ownership of six slaves employed by her mother.2,16
