William Jessup was born on 21 Jun 1797 in Southampton, Long Island, New York
He was probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Zebulon Jessup, in the 1800 Federal Census of South Hampton, Suffolk Co., New York


William graduated from Yale College in 1815.1
He moved to Montrose, Pennsylvania

He was was admitted to the bar in Feb 1820, and appointed Register and Recorder of Susquehanna Co. in Jan 1824. From 1838 to 1851 he was the presiding judge of the Eleventh Judicial District of Pennsylvania. After his retirement from the bench he resumed the practice of law until he was disabled by paralysis in 1863.15,16,17,18
William married Amanda Harris, daughter of Henry Harris, on 4 Jul 1820.8,9,10
