Narrative:
William Jessup was born on 21 Jun 1797 in Southampton, Long Island, New York.5,6,7He was probably one of the two males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Zebulon Jessup, in the 1800 Federal Census of South Hampton, Suffolk Co., New York.13 He was probably one of the two males age 10 to 16 listed in the household of his father in the 1810 Federal Census of Southampton, Suffolk Co., New York.14
William graduated from Yale College in 1815.1
He moved to Montrose, Pennsylvania, in 1818.1
He was was admitted to the bar in Feb 1820, and appointed Register and Recorder of Susquehanna Co. in Jan 1824. From 1838 to 1851 he was the presiding judge of the Eleventh Judicial District of Pennsylvania. After his retirement from the bench he resumed the practice of law until he was disabled by paralysis in 1863.15,16,17,18
William married Amanda Harris, daughter of Henry Harris, on 4 Jul 1820.8,9,10
William appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania Co., Montrose, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son William), one age 10 to 15 (unknown), and one age 30 to 40 (himself), one female under age 5 (daughter Harriet), two age 5 to 10 (Mary), and one age 20 to 30 (unknown), and one age 30 to 40 (wife Amanda.)19
William appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Montrose, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son George), two age 5 to 10 (Henry and Samuel), one age 10 to 15 (William), and one age 20 to 30 (unknown), and one age 40 to 50 (himself), one female under age 5 (daughter Fanny), one age 10 to 15 (Harriet), two age 15 to 20 (Mary and another), and one age 40 to 50 (wife Amanda.)20
William received the degree of LL. D. from Hamilton College in 1848.1
William and Amanda appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Montrose, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 1 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $40,000. Their children William, Henry, Samuel, Fanny, George, Phebe and Hunting were listed as living with them, There were also three servants, Hugh Mithcell, age 22, and Johann Ahern, age 17, both born in Ireland, and Orpha Brown, age 19, born in Pennsylvania.2
William and Amanda appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Montrose, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 23 Aug 1860, reporting real estate valued at $20,000 and personal estate of $6,000. Their children Samuel, Fanny, George, Phebe and Hunting were listed as living with them, Also listed were three servants, Mary Clary, age 25, Allica Holley, age 15, and Martin McNerrey, all born in Ireland.3
William died on 11 Sep 1868 at age 71.6,11 He was buried in Montrose Cemetery, Montrose, Susquehanna Co., Pennsylvania.12
