Narrative:

James Hartland Cobb was born on 20 Jan 1813 in Pawlet, Rutland Co., Vermont.6,7
He was probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Capt. Willard Cobb, in the 1820 Federal Census of Wells, Rutland Co., Vermont.12
He moved to Indiana with his parents about 1827.13 He was probably one of the three males age 15 to 20 listed in the household of his father in the 1830 Federal Census of Decatur Co., Indiana.14
On 25 Sep 1835 James was granted a patent for 76.3 acres of land about eight miles southeast of in Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana, under the Cash Entry Act of April 24,1820. That act reduced the minimum price of public land to $1.25 per acre, and the minimum purchase to 80 acres, but required payment in cash, not on credit.2
James married Margaret Newman on 5 Nov 1835 in Decatur Co., Indiana, with Ezra Lathrop, justice of the peace, offciating.8,9
James appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Decatur Co., Indiana, with a household consisting of two males under age 5 (son Allen and another), one age 20 to 30 (himself), and one female under age 5 (daughter Sarah), one age 20 to 30 (wife Margaret.)15
He was a farmer all his life.16,17,18,19
James and Margaret moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, by 1844, and later to Bloomfield.20
On 1 Jan 1847 James was granted a patent for two parcels of land, again under the 1820 act. One included the eastern third of present-day in Bloomfield, Davis Co., Iowa, and the other was immediately northeast of it. The first contained 97.73 acres and the second contained 80 acres.21,22 Then, on 1 Mar 1850 he was granted a patent for an additional 40 acres under that act, located on the east and south sides of the previous two parcels.23
James and Margaret appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Perry Twp., Davis Co., Iowa, enumerated 3 Sep 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,600. Their children Sarah, Allen, Emily and Eliza were listed as living with them, as was 21 year-old Chapman Corick, apparently a farm hand.24
James and Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bloomfield, Davis Co., Iowa, enumerated 5 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $600. Their children Allen, Emily, Eliza, Emily, Hellen, Ada and Kate were listed as living with them.25
James and Margaret moved to Illinois before 1870. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Anna, Union Co., Illinois, enumerated 9 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $1,500 and personal estate of $500. Their children Hellen, Ada and Kate were listed as living with them.26
No record of Margaret or James has been found after the 1870 census, except his tombstone, in Cameron, Missouri. Their daughter Sarah and her second husband moved to Cameron shortly after their marrige in Apr 1874. It seems likely Margaret died in Illinois and James moved to Cameron to live with Sarah and her husband. It is also possible that both moved there and Margaret also died there, but that seems less likely given that no tombstone has been found for her there.27
James died in 1877.10 He was buried in Packard Cemetery, Cameron, Clinton Co., Missouri.11

Children:
     Children with Margaret Newman

The 1840 census shows two males under age five in the household, but Allen is the only known son of that age. There may have been another son who died before 1850, but no other record of him has been found. The only record of Emily J. born about 1850 is the 1860 census, where she is listed along with her 15-year-old sister of the same name. She may have been an otherwise unknown daughter, although it seems unlikely that was actually her name. Or the entry may simply have been an error.32,33
