Gross had previously operated a similiar business under the name of Thieme & Gross at the same address, with Theodore F. Thieme. By 1900 Joseph was operating the business with a new partner, Arwid Polster, and the firm was called Pellens & Polster. It was at the same address, but the buildings had been re-numbered and it was know known as 902 Calhoun.
