Sebastian Goembel was born on 26 May 1794 in Niederaula, Kurfuerstentum Hessen
G.
4,5 He was baptized on 28 May 1794 in Niederaula
G.
4 Sebastian was baptized as Sebastian Gömpel, but in the U. S. he used the spelling Sebastian Goembel.
10 Sebastian married Anna Eva Schaeffer, daughter of Johann Jacob Schäfer and Catharina Elisabetha Gießlerinn, on 6 Dec 1812 in Niederaula, Kurfuerstentum Hessen
G.
6,7 Sebastian and Anna Eva Schaeffer arrived in New Orleans
G on 2 Jun 1834, with their children
Catharine, Elisabetha, Amalie, Henrich,
Jacob, Catharina, Philipp, and J., aboard the
Ernst and Gustav, having departed Bremen. Family lore says they departed Hamburg on a sailing vessel in March, with the voyage taking 69 days. Trans-Atlantic travel at the time was by sailing ship so the time, so that length may well be correct, but the records show the embarkation port as Bremen rather than Hamburg.
11,12,13 The family traveled up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers to Ft. Clark (now Peoria, Illinois), and settled in Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois
G. According to family lore, they followed Farm Creek to Washington Twp., supposedly arriving there 9 Jun 1834. Making that voyage in a week seems unlikely even with the steamboats then traveling those rivers, so the version appearing in an 1885 local history seems more believable. That version states that they remained two weeks in New Orleans, then set out for St. Louis, but stopped instead at Havana, Illinois. After a month there, they proceeded to Ft. Clark.
14,15 Sebastian took possession of land on Farm Creek, in Washington Twp., Tazewell Co.
G, and built a log house on it. When the area was opened for homesteading he established a claim, and the patent was recorded 29 Aug 1838.
16,17 On 20 May 1841 Sebastian together with Henry Rohrback was granted a patent for 160 acres of land in Tazewell Co., Illinois
G, under the Cash Entry Act of April 24,1820. That act reduced the minimum price of public land to $1.25 per acre, and the minimum purchase to 80 acres, but required payment in cash, not on credit.
18 Sebastian and Anna appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Tazewell Co., Illinois
G, enumerated 28 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,800. Henry Riddles, age 11, relationship unknown, was listed as living with them.
3 Sebastian and Anna appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois
G, enumerated 21 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $3,000 and personal estate of $300. Mela Goemble, age 15, relationship unknown, and John Sloack, a laborer, were listed as living with them.
19 Sebastian was identified as a merchant in Niederaula
G, but was listed as a farmer when he immigrated and pursued that occupation in Illinois.
20,21,22,23 It appears that Sebastian retired, and he and Anna moved into the town of Washington
G by 1870.
24 They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Washington, Tazewell Co., Illinois
G, enumerated 20 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $800 and personal estate of $200.
25 Sebastian died on 10 Jan 1871 in Washington, Illinois
G, at age 76.
