Capt. Gideon Lathrop was born on 1 Apr 1805 in Burlington, Vermont
G.
4,5,6 Gideon married Elizabeth Dunlop, daughter of Robert Dunlop and Janet Andrew, on 14 Feb 1837 in Albany, New York
G.
7,8,9 He and Elizabeth Dunlop lived for a few years in Burlington, Vermont
G, then moved to New York in the early 1840's, living first in Fort Edward, Washington Co., then settling further south, in Stockport, Columbia Co. by 1860.
12,13,14,15 He and Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Fort Edward, Washington Co., New York
G, enumerated 24 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $4,000. Their children Helen, Robert, Janet, and Archibald were listed as living with them, as were Jane Berril, age 36, Mary Cane, age 15, perhaps servants, and William Connel, age 23, a laborer.
3 Gideon and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Stockport, Columbia Co., New York
G, enumerated 1 Aug 1860, reporting real estate valued at $9,000. Their children Robert, Janet, Archibald, and Alexander were listed as living with them, as was Jacob Thompson, 17-year old Black farm laborer.
14 Gideon and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Stockport, Columbia Co., New York
G, enumerated 5 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $60,000 and personal estate of $50,000. Their daughter Janet was listed as living with them, as were Mary Wiggens and Mary Monse, domestic servants, and Leonord Raissmer, farm hand.
16 He was a pioneer in the steamboat business, both on Lake Champlain and on the Hudson River. He was captain on Lake Champlain steamers from 1823 to 1850, and captain of the
North America, running between New York and Albany.
17,18,19 Evidently the steamboat business was profitable. Gideon has been found listed in the Federal Tax lists under Internal Revenue act of 1 Jul 1862, which was passed to raise revenue during the Civil War. In 1862 he was assessed $5.73 in taxes on two carriages, valued at $75 each, and 91 oz. of silver plate. In 1864 he was assessed taxes of $37.68 on the same items and $1,064 in income. In 1865 he was assessed $44.80 on income of $1,609, three carriages, three watches, and silver plate.
20 By 1870 he had apparently retired to farming.
21 Gideon applied for a passport on 5 Nov 1873, stating that he and his wife intended to travel abroad. They did travel to Europe that autumn, and he returned in January. She stayed in Dresden, then decided to go to Russia. Since their passport was in his name, "accompanied by his wife," he, as her "attorney," applied for one in her name on 28 Mar 1874.
22,23 Gideon died on 5 Dec 1877 in Stockport, New York
G, at age 72.
10 He was buried on 8 Dec 1877 in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, Albany Co., New York
