Narrative:

Roswell Gilbert Spaulding was born on 3 Mar 1814 in Elmore, Lamoille Co., VermontG.4,5
     He moved to BurlingtonG with his parents before 1820. He was probably one of the three males under age 10 listed in the household of his father, Daniel Fitch Spaulding, in the 1820 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG.10 He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father in the 1830 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG, though he was actually 16.11
     Roswell married Calista Farnsworth, daughter of Holden Farnsworth and Susanna Cobb, on 3 Mar 1839.6,7,8
     Roswell appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG, with a household consisting of two males age 20 to 30 (himself and another), one age 30 to 40 (unknown), one female age 20 to 30 (wife Calista), and one age 60 to 70 (his wife's mother Susanna Cobb.)1
     Roswell and Calista moved to MichiganG about 1848. They appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dunn, Dane Co., WisconsinG, enumerated 27 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,000. Their children Calvin and Francis were listed as living with them, as was her mother.2
     Roswell and Calista moved to Hillsdale Co.G before 1860. They appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Jonesville, Hilldale Co., MichiganG, enumerated 23 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate of $250. Their son Calvin was listed as living with them.12
     He was a house painter.13,14,15,16
     Roswell and Calista appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Fayette Twp., Hillsdale Co., MichiganG, enumerated 22 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate of $500. Their son Calvin was listed as living with them, as were his wife, Arietta C. Gaylord, and their son, Fred.17
     Roswell and Calista appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Jonesville, Hillsdale Co., Michigan G, enumerated 14 Jun 1880. Arietta C. Gaylord wife of their son Calvin, and their daughter Florence, were also listed in the household.18 Calvin was listed in the household of his sister Laura and her husband, Charles A. Nimocks, in Minneapolis. Arietta and Florence were also listed in that household, suggesting they were in the process of moving to Minneapolis.19
     His wife died on 5 Jun 1888 in Brainerd, MinnesotaG.20,21
     According to a family history published in 1897, Roswell was living in Minneapolis, MinnesotaG, in 1893. His son Calvin is known to have been living in Minneapolis about that time.22
     It seems likely he was the "J. A. Spaulding" who died on 2 Dec 1894 in Rochester State Hospital, Rochester, Olmstead Co., MinnesotaG, at age 80, of senile dementia, even though the initals are not correct. The age at death and occupation are correct, but the fields for birth place and parent names, which would have been helpful, were marked "unknown."9

Calista Farnsworth was born on 4 Feb 1811 in Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG.4,5,6
     She was probably one of the four females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Holden Farnsworth, in the 1820 Federal Census of Essex, Essex Co., New YorkG.11
     Calista married Roswell Gilbert Spaulding, son of Daniel Fitch Spaulding and Parthena Gilbert, on 3 Mar 1839.7,4,8
     She was probably the female age 20 to 30 listed in the household of her husband, Roswell Gilbert Spaulding, in the 1840 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG.12
     Calista and Roswell moved to MichiganG about 1848. They appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Dunn, Dane Co., WisconsinG, enumerated 27 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $1,000. Their children Calvin and Francis were listed as living with them, as was her mother.13
     Calista and Roswell moved to Hillsdale Co.G before 1860. They appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Jonesville, Hilldale Co., MichiganG, enumerated 23 Jun 1860, reporting real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate of $250. Their son Calvin was listed as living with them.14
     Calista and Roswell appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Fayette Twp., Hillsdale Co., MichiganG, enumerated 22 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $2,000 and personal estate of $500. Their son Calvin was listed as living with them, as were his wife, Arietta C. Gaylord, and their son, Fred.15
     Calista and Roswell appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Jonesville, Hillsdale Co., Michigan G, enumerated 14 Jun 1880. Arietta C. Gaylord wife of their son Calvin, and their daughter Florence, were also listed in the household.16 Calvin was listed in the household of his sister Laura and her husband, Charles A. Nimocks, in Minneapolis. Arietta and Florence were also listed in that household, suggesting they were in the process of moving to Minneapolis.17
     Calista died on 5 Jun 1888 in Brainerd, MinnesotaG, at age 77.9,10

Reuben Farnsworth was born on 4 Jun 1751 in Cambridge, MassachusettsG.1,4,5
     Reuben married second Anna Kellogg in Egremont, MassachusettsG.6,7,8
     Reuben and Anna moved to Dorset, VermontG, in 1775.1 Reuben appeared on the 1790 Federal Census of Landgrove, Bennington Co., VermontG, (which was enumerated 4 Apr 1791, after Vermont became a state in Mar 1791), with a household consisting of two males over 16 (himself and son Moses), four under 16 (sons Titus, Reuben, Holden, and William) and, and five females (wife Anna and daughters Dorothy, Rhodah, Anna, and Mary.)12
     Reuben appeared on the 1800 Federal Census of Dorset, Bennington Co., VermontG, with a household consisting of one male under age 10 (son Titus), two age 16 to 15 (two of Reuben, Holden, and William), one age 26 to 45 (Moses), and one over 45 (himself), and one female under 10 (daughter Sarah), two age 10 to 16 (Dorothy and Rhodah), two age 16 to 25 (Anna and Mary), and one over 45 (wife, Anna.)13
     Reuben and Anna moved to Burlington, VermontG, in 1805.1
     Reuben appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., VermontG, with a household consisting of one male age 10 to 16 (son Jeduthan), and one over 45 (himself), and two females age 16 to 26 (daughters Sarah and Dorothy), and one over 45 (wife, Anna.)14
     Reuben died on 18 Aug 1813 in Burlington, VermontG, at age 62.10,11 He was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Dorset, VermontG, sharing a headstone with his second wife.9
