11 He was born as Ole Eriksen. Surnames were not commonly used in Norway at the time, and his family, like most, used as a "last name" a patronymic, or name based on the father's first name. Ole, like many of his family, adopted the surname Erstand, which is believed to be the name of the farm where they lived when he immigrated to the United States.
