Narrative:

     Henry Hayes Doolittle was born on 29 May 1821 in Burlington, Vermont.7,8,9 He was probably the male under age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father, Philo Doolittle, in the 1830 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont.15
     His mother died on 11 Aug 1837, when Henry was 16 years old.16,17 He was probably the male age 15 to 20 listed in the household of his father in the 1840 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont.18
     Henry married Eliza C. Mayo, daughter of Henry Mayo and Abigail Cobb, on 25 Mar 1847 in Burlington, Vermont, with Rev. J. K. Convese officiating.10,11,12
     Henry and Eliza appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, enumerated 20 Aug 1850, reporting no real estate owned. Their son William was listed as living with them, as were Margaret Devet, age 22 and Margaret Patterson, age 19, both from Ireland, and John Atkins, age 13 and birthplace unknown, all shown with no occupation. George Perkins, an 19-year-old laborer was also listed.19
     His wife died on 4 Oct 1859.20,21
     Henry appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, enumerated 2 Jul 1860, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $7,000. His children William and Mary were listed as living with him, as were Briget Gilligan, age 30, and Margaret Sullivan, age 26, both servants from Ireland.22
     He was in the hardware business from an early age, first under the name of Davy & Doolittle, then as Strong & Doolittle. He later conducted the business by himself. He was forced to retire about 1864 because of failing health.1,23,24
     Henry appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, enumerated 13 Jun 1870, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $5,000. His children William and Mary were listed as living with him, as were Briget Gilligan, now reported as age 35 and as housekeeper, James Bradshaw, age 66 and listed as a boarder, and Samuel B. Whitney, a 28-year-old music teacher.2
     After his retirement from full-time work he served as city treasurer for a time. He also worked as bookkeeper for the hardware firm Ripley & Holton, and then for the department store The Old Bee Hive. Failing eyesight forced him to totally retire about 1890.25,26,27,28
     He lived for many years at Pine St. & Bank St., until moving in with his daughter and her husband.1
     Henry appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, on Pearl St., enumerated 12 Jun 1880. His daughter Mary was listed as living with him, with her husband, Nelson W. Chamberlin, and their children Harry and Mary Ann. Also listed were Briget Gilligan, now reported as age 44 and as a servant, and two other servants, Nora McCarthy, age 21 from Ireland, and Eliza Ward, age 17 from Vermont.29
     Henry appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Burlington, Chittenden Co., Vermont, in the household of his daughter Mary and her husband, Nelson W. Chamberlin, and their four children and two servants.30
     Henry died on 5 Mar 1902 in Burlington, Vermont, at age 80, at the home of his daughter Mary.13,14 He was buried on 7 Mar 1902 in Elmwood Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont.1
