Isabella Murphy Long

Isabella A. Murphy was born on 25 Mar 1811 in Murphy Settlement, Ste. Genevieve District, Louisiana Territory, which later became St. Francois Co., Missouri. She was supposedly the first white child born there.5,6,7
     Isabella married Philip Graham Long, son of Griffin Long and Sarah Graham, on 15 Jan 1833.8,9,10
     She was probably the female age 20 to 30 listed in the household of her husband, Philip, in the 1840 Federal Census of St. Francis Twp., St. Francois Co., Missouri.14
     Isabella and Philip appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of St. Francois Co., Missouri, enumerated 20 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $2,000. Their children Sarah, Catharine, Eliza, Jane, William, Isabella, Philip and John were listed as living with them, as were William Brooks, age 20, and John Dougherty, age 44, who were also tanners.15
     Isabella was named an heir in the will of her husband dated 22 Jul 1856 in St. Francois Co., Missouri, in which he left her all his property for her widowhood, to be used for her benefit and that of their children, including the education of those who had not yet completed their educations.16
     Isabella and Philip appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dents Station, St. Fransois Co., Missouri, enumerated 16 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $8,525 and personal estate of $12,6600. Their children Jane, William, Isabella, Philip, John, Horace and Elizabeth were listed as living with them.17
     Her husband died on 15 Feb 1864.18
     Isabella appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Farmington, St. Francois Co., Missouri, enumerated 19 Aug 1870, reporting real estate valued at $4,000 and personal estate of $7,000. Her children Isabella, Philip and John were listed as living with her, as were Sarah's children, Cora, Catherine, Jennie, William and Philip.19
     Isabella appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Farmington, St. Francois Co., Missouri, enumerated 2 Jun 1880. Her children Jane and John were listed as living with her, as was Caroline Emdy, a 22-year old servant.20
     Isabella died on 14 Feb 1901 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, at age 89, at the home of her daughter Jennie.11,12 She was buried in Masonic Cemetery, Farmington, St. Francois Co., Missouri.13
